EduCom News 2021
The break of the Covid 19 pandemia had influenced the IBUS education program in 2020. The most prominent influence was on Module 2 hands-on training due to travel restrictions.
However, we have struggled to continue with the educational program. In a special effort, EduCom had created a curriculum for a first ever virtual Module 1 workshop.
Led by Dr. Carolina Palmela and Dr. Joana Torres, the first virtual Module 1 was successfully held on December 4-5 from Lisbon, Portugal. Apart of oral presentations from world leading intestinal ultrasound experts, hands-on sessions using pre-recorded cine loops and pictures were effectively accomplished. Technical challenges of hand-on sessions were well met, and participants found the workshop most beneficial. Due to the current Covid 19 situation, the next Module 1 workshops in 2021 (in Australia and Amsterdam) will be held also virtually.
During 2020, Module 2 training continued on a national basis in few countries. We hope that 2021 will open new possibilities for Module 2 training, and EduCom is trying to increase the number of IBUS recognized training centers for the time that travel limitations will decrease.
A novel virtual diary was introduced in 2020 for the monitoring of progress during 2020, assisting both instructors and trainees to record their achievements during the Module 2 training.
Four webinars were held in 2020, led by IBUS leaders and IUS experts, covering topics in the imaging in Crohn patients during pregnancy, acute severe ulcerative colitis, differentiation of inflammation and fibrosis, disease activity in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease and the use of perineal and transrectal ultrasound in perianal Crohn's disease. The webinars were viewed by high number of attendees and were recorded for future use. For 2021 we plan to increase the number of webinars, as a learning tool for beginners and more experienced IUS performers.
